As the years pass and our pile of baby items grows ever higher, I've begun to lean more and more toward quality over quantity. I find myself buying toys, clothes, and shoes that I know will last and be passed on to future children. I've also grown to love and appreciate small businesses started by mamas. Women who possess the drive to not only take care of their own kids but make products and run a company as well are truly inspiring! Enter Freshly Picked.
Susan Petersen started making baby moccasins in 2009 after becoming frustrated by the lack of well-designed baby shoes. Using her second child, Gus, as a mocc-tester, and a bag of scrap leather she picked up at a yard sale, she began experimenting with designs. Working at her kitchen table, on a shoestring budget, Susan persisted through several attempts until she had created a pair of moccasins that not only looked adorable on Gus’ chubby little feet, but stayed on his feet as well. Being residents of the Chicago burbs, the weather is only getting colder as the weeks pass. And it's hard enough to keep our little Ames' socks on, let alone baby shoes. So when these beautifully crafted moccasins arrived at our door we couldn't wait to put them to the test!
Right out of the box, I was impressed with the obvious care and attention to detail that goes into each pair. From the overall design, to details like the tassels, seams, and stitching--everything is clean and precise. The durable leather is soft on the inside and smooth on the outside, and Ames couldn't resist holding them tight as soon as we slipped them on. Which brings me to the truest test of a great baby shoe: fit. Experienced parents know, if they don't stay on your child's feet, it won't be long before they're being replaced. But these moccs pass with flying colors. After a full slate of crawling, rolling, sliding, pulling, and gnawing...they are just as snug as the moment you slide them on. In the world of baby shoes, this is a rarity; the little elastic strap is genius! I can already tell they will stand up to the wear and tear as he begins taking his first steps. Though hopefully not for a few more months...I'm not sure what I'll do when I have two little ones running around!
I'm so in love with these shoes that I've teamed up with Freshly Picked to give away a pair to one of you! I know your little one will look just as darling in them as my sweet baby Ames. :) Head over to my Instagram to enter!
